CMTS-02 Law and Ethics

Law and Ethics is an essential aspect of becoming a competent counselor. This 45 hour-eight-week course will cover such issues as current legal issues surrounding substance abuse disorders as they relate to employment patient rights, liability and potential hazards. It will not only review legal laws and regulations as they relate to substance use but will also look at laws for therapists and other disciplines such as the criminal justice, medical model and mental health field because of the continued work that counselors must facilitate across these disciplines. Concepts of prevention and community issues will be described according to the federal statement on prevention. Other course topics include training, improving educational techniques and outreach. This course will touch on subjects such as screening techniques, communication and intervention and referrals yet will refer to other detailed courses for full training materials.
